R&D project:

EIT Diginovation

Rehub is an innovative AI-assisted digital rehabilitation solution that enhances the recovery of patients with non-specific low back pain (LBP). The project aims to be included in the German healthcare system through the DiGA approval process..

Objective of the EIT DiGinnovation Programme

ReHub is a digital rehabilitation project designed for the treatment of patients with non-specific low back pain, leveraging artificial intelligence and computer vision to deliver personalised, real-time exercise programmes. Rather than relying exclusively on in-person rehabilitation, ReHub enables home-based rehabilitation with continuous monitoring and automatic correction of patient movements. This approach not only improves accessibility and efficiency, but also accelerates recovery times and increases treatment adherence, achieving adherence rates of up to 85%.

Current Status of the Project

Currently in the validation phase, ReHub is conducting a decentralised clinical trial with 120 participants in Germany to assess the effectiveness of the treatment and generate the clinical evidence required for inclusion in the DiGA (Digital Health Applications) framework, which enables the reimbursement of digital applications within the German healthcare system.

The project is also aligned with the requirements of the EU Medical Device Regulation (MDR), with an ongoing transition towards Class IIa medical device classification.

Expected results

The expected impact of ReHub is significant across three key areas:

  1. Health: The system is expected to benefit more than 160,000 European patients over a three-year period, improving functional capacity and reducing the duration of disability.
  2. Economic: Cost reductions of up to 50% compared to traditional rehabilitation treatments are projected, potentially generating substantial savings for healthcare systems, estimated at over €12 million annually.
  3. Scalability: Following its implementation in Germany, the project aims to expand to other European countries, such as Austria and Switzerland, as well as to international markets, leveraging its flexible subscription-based business model and the widespread adoption of digital infrastructure across the healthcare sector.

Why ReHub Has Been Selected

ReHub differentiates itself from other digital rehabilitation solutions by offering dynamic treatment personalisation, enabled by real-time movement correction and the collection of detailed session-level data during exercise sessions. In addition, it allows healthcare professionals to remotely monitor multiple patients, thereby optimising resource utilisation and reducing administrative burden.
