The Dénia Health Department extends Tele-physiotherapy to Primary Care

Following the successful launch of the ReHub telerehabilitation platform at Denia Hospital in 2020, both entities have decided to expand the offer to allow primary care professionals to refer patients directly to this innovative online therapy. This decision is based on the need to continue to provide effective and timely care to patients.

The Tele-physiotherapy will be offered to patients who will receive personalised exercisesduring aface-to-face consultation with a physiotherapist.They will then continue with their exercises at home, under the remote supervision of the same professional through the ReHub platform. Practitioners have access to an extensive Library of over 3500 videos covering a wide variety of treatments.

So far, more than two hundred patients in the Marina Alta have benefited from this tele-physiotherapy, which allows therapeutic exercises to be carried out in person, withonline monitoring by the physiotherapist.

Tele-rehabilitation helps alleviate the burden on primary care.

More than 7000 sessions and 50,000 exercises have been carried out with the platform to date, representing approximately 7% of all outpatient physiotherapy treatments. This has contributed to reducing waiting lists and delays in care, increasing service activity and improving patient follow-up, which has led to a decrease in recurrences.

The AI-based motion recognition system allows patients to perform the therapy from their mobile devices, tablets or laptops, providing a comfortable, accessible and safe experience, always supervised by a healthcare professional. It has proven to be especially beneficial for patients with cervical, dorsal or lumbar pain, non-limiting shoulder pathologies and arthritic hip and knee problems with muscle weakness.

This underlines the effectiveness of this therapy, which has been rated by patients with an average of 4.2 points out of 5, demonstrating their satisfaction with the treatment.
The rate of patient adherence to TelePhysiotherapy is similar to that of face-to-face sessions, highlighting its positive impact on the medical care and quality of life of patients in the region.

In addition to its implementation in Primary Care, the Physiotherapy Service is exploring the possibility of extending the duration of the programme on the platform so that patients can maintain their exercise routine over time. It is also planned to introduce combination therapies covering both hospital and home settings, especially for post-surgical shoulder or knee patients.

The success of tele-physiotherapy has opened up new perspectives for future implementations in other areas of physiotherapy. The Dénia Health Department plans to develop specific plans for patients operated on hip and knee prosthesis, promoting home work complemented with on-site rehabilitation.

Adrían Ventero, Physiotherapy Supervisor at the Hospital de Denia, Marina Salud – considers – the potential benefit of this modality in the treatment of chronic pathologies, such as dialysis and oncology. In addition, Ventero envisions a future in which telerehabilitation plays an important role in prevention and health promotion in primary care.
